Banting – How does it work
It seems that everything we thought we knew about food is a lie. Low-fat diets and food products currently dominating our grocery stores. Worldwide obesity numbers are increasing yearly, and most sufferers have struggled to lose weight while following the low-fat lifestyle.
The truth, in fact, has been a lie the whole time and the Low Carb High Fat (LCHF) lifestyle proves this. Eating fat does not make you fat. For the past few years, LCHF diets have boomed making a big comeback. Bringing down obesity and diabetes at record rates encouraging healthy fats and helping us get over our sugar addiction.
Banting named after William Banting, a severely obese undertaker from Britain who lost weight after following an LCHF diet prescribed by his physician Dr William Harvey. He later in 1863 wrote a booklet named Letter on Corpulence that became very popular.
How does Banting Work?
By restricting your Carbohydrate intake, cutting out sugars and upping your fat intake your body goes into a state of Ketosis. While in ketosis your body will “switch energy sources” and instead of using Cabs as energy your body will use your fat reserve instead.
To enter Ketosis, one must eat under 50g of carbs a day until you reach your satisfactory weight. Then slowly increase carbs by including more orange list items. Weight loss should be maintained for at least a year to successfully keep off weight but bear in mind if you go back to eating what you did before banting you will find yourself in the same boat as when you started your banting journey. Banting is a lifestyle and if you want to stay well wave away those carbs and sugars.
Your plate should be made up of Low Carbs, Medium Protein and High Fat Food. With a palm size piece of meat and loads of Green List vegetables. You can’t consume any of the foods on the Light Red and Red List if you want to lose weight.
* Never starve yourself. As your body adjusts it will go through stages of carbs and sugar withdrawals, this can last for two weeks. This feeling should not be confused for hunger so make sure to eat only green list foods during this time and plenty of fats. You may experience cravings for sugar and flu-like symptoms.
Who Can Start Banting?
Anyone can start Banting. Commonly people who start suffer from Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, Hypercholesterolemia, High Blood Pressure, Hypertension.
Even if you are just an average person with no weight or health problems, you can start banting. Banting has many health benefits:
- Energy Levels go up. You experience a burst of energy that you didn’t have before!
- Fewer Cravings. Eating high fat keeps you satisfied longer, and when you do feel like a snack there’s a wide variety of low carb snack you can enjoy, you also eat way fewer calories eating low carb.
- You lose weight! Since your body is now using Fat as an energy source, it will burn off any extra weight you might be carrying around.
- It increases your good cholesterol also known as High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL)
- It reduces your blood sugar levels and insulin levels
The list continues.
Banting to maintain your weight.
Banting is not only for those who want to lose weight but works wonders if you want to maintain your weight and eat clean. Unlike almost all diets, banting encourages you to eat fat. You can enjoy that delicious piece of crispy chicken skin and smother your veg in butter and have with no guilty feelings.
When you want to maintain your weight, you can use the green and orange list in combination and slowly increase your number of carbs from 50g to 100g slowly.
For instance from 50 to 75 for 2-3 months and see if you lose, gain or maintain.
Can I cheat or have off days?
No. There are no cheat days or off day on banting. When you consume more carbs than needed, you will no longer be in ketosis. That means that you will not be losing weight until you get back in ketosis. When you cheat, you can expect to experience cramping, bloating, nausea, headaches and migraines for several days.
Will I keep the weight off?
To lose weight long term and to successfully maintain the weight loss, you should maintain your goal weight for at least a year. As your body heals so does your mind as well as your need to eat the wrong things.
Please remember that Rome was not built in a day and that hopping on and off the scale is not doing you any good. Be patient, follow the Banting guidelines and watch the magic happen. Once you start losing weight weigh only in the mornings after using the bathroom and before having breakfast. We recommend measuring yourself instead of weighing on a scale as you will see more weight loss.
*It’s important that if you have any medical condition, you consult your doctor before following any diet.
